The lawyer representing the grandfather of the 16 Ohio “house of horrors ” children slammed local police for reportedly not securing the crime scene.

Dorain Baum, attorney for Gary Siders, 73, had slammed police for not securing the crime scene since the discovery. However, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson explained to local news outlet WCHM that the county didn’t have enough manpower to staff officers at the home.

“Those officers are out handling regular calls. They can’t be sitting on that house the whole time,” Wilson said. “If somebody goes in there, there’s a really good chance that they’re going to get hurt.”

The elder Siders, alongside his son Gary Siders Jr 36, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Siders, 33, and wife Christina Siders, 67, were all arrested last month after the 16 children of Gary Jr. and Elizabeth were discovered in the family’s small Hamden, Ohio home in deplorable conditions.
Police at the time had described the children raging from age one to 18, as living like “feral animals” in just one room in the filthy home. Authorities had said during the first days of the investigation that the children were largely confined to a single 12 x 12 room. The children were placed in protective custody, and seven were hospitalized, with one in critical condition.

All four adults were charged with second-degree felony child endangerment. Siders Sr. also faces 16 counts of child endangerment. All four suspects have entered a not guilty plea.

Authorities have since acknowledged that the children were in such a dire state that they could have been facing “multiple deaths” had officers arrived just 24 hours later.
