The Siders family child endangerment case in Vinton County saw two major legal proceedings this week: a primary defendant was released from medical custody and a co-defendant requested a mental evaluation.

Gary Siders Sr. appeared physically in a Vinton County court on Monday, Aug. 3, to sign a modified $300,000 recognizance bond. The filing marks his formal transition out of physical custody and hospital care following a medical emergency suffered in July.

He was released on a personal recognizance bond rather than being returned to jail, primarily because his severe medical conditions risked bankrupting Vinton County. His whereabouts remain classified for safety issues.

Under the strict terms of his release, Siders Sr. is subjected to court-mandated conditions, including GPS monitoring, address verification, substance screening, and no contact with the victims or co-defendants.

Due to ongoing safety and security concerns, officials have not publicly disclosed his current residential location.

Simultaneously, co-defendant Elizabeth Siders, 33, mother of the 16 children, filed a formal request for a mental competency evaluation. She is the final adult defendant in the case to make this legal move.

The evaluation will determine whether she is mentally fit to stand trial or if the defense counsel can pursue an insanity defense. Similar competency assessments have already been requested for the other adult family members charged in the case.

The charges stem from a June 30, 2026, raid on a Hamden, Ohio, home. Authorities arrested four adult members of the Siders family after discovering 16 children living in what investigators described as severely deplorable and unlivable conditions.

The defendants collectively face multiple counts of child endangerment. Court proceedings remain delayed pending the results of the outstanding psychiatric and competency evaluations.

All four adult defendants have requested or been ordered to undergo psychological evaluations to determine if they are fit to stand trial. A medical examiner has been tasked with reviewing the cases. State law allows a 30-day window for these reports to be completed, placing a temporary freeze on standard trial progress until at least the end of August.

Although all four family members were arrested on initial child endangerment charges on June 30, the local prosecutor is still preparing the full case.

Because the 16 children were allegedly hidden away for nearly four years and never attended school, prosecutors and defense teams are sifting through a massive backlog of historical records across multiple counties.

Defense teams have waived early preliminary hearings to avoid rushing before all the evidence can be reviewed
