St. Augustine, Florida — Mexican national Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, 28, from San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico, has been identified as the man who d13d after being struck by a semi-truck during an encounter involving U.S. immigration authorities in St. Augustine, Florida.

Authorities said the incident occurred on July 14 after officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) approached a vehicle carrying four people.

According to investigators, the occupants fled on foot, and Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán ran into a nearby highway, where he was hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The investigation remains ongoing.

Family members identified the victim as Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, a husband and father of two young children. His wife, Yésica (Yezzika) Alamilla López, traveled from Guanajuato, Mexico, to Orlando, Florida, after learning of the tragedy.

She said her husband had entered the United States with a valid tourist visa and had been visiting relatives in Atlanta, Georgia, before traveling to Florida only a few days before the incident.

The family has received assistance from Isaret Jeffers, founder of the Orlando-based advocacy organization Colectivo Árbol, as well as support from the Mexican Consulate in Orlando.

According to Jeffers, Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán had already purchased a return flight to Mexico and planned to return home within days.

His remains are expected to be repatriated to San Luis de la Paz, where relatives are preparing for his funeral.

Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident happened after the immigration encounter, but they have not released additional details explaining what led officers to stop the vehicle or what became of the other three occupants.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not publicly disclosed further information while the investigation continues. Authorities have stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being reviewed.

The case of Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán has drawn significant attention in both the United States and Mexico.

Mexican officials have indicated they are monitoring the investigation closely, while Yésica Alamilla López continues working with authorities and advocacy groups to return her husband’s remains to Guanajuato.

As investigators gather additional evidence, officials say they will determine the full sequence of events that led to the tr4g1c incident.
