🚨 A RACE AGAINST TIME: THE SHOCKING STORY OF THE BABY WHO SURVIVED EXTREME COLD

He Thought It Was a Cat. It Was a Newborn in the Trash.

On a cold day in 1983, outside an apartment complex in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Bruce McDonnell heard a sound from a dumpster.

He told his wife it might be a cat. He looked over the rim.

A baby lay there, hours old, umbilical cord still attached, wrapped against the weather and already slipping into hypothermia. The cry was thin. Terri McDonnell pulled him to her chest to give him heat. They called for an ambulance.

At the hospital the infant was listed as John Winters Doe. Doctors said he would not have cried much longer. He lived. The couple who found him later adopted him. He grew up as Sean McDonnell.

Versions of this scene have repeated in other cities — a mew from a bin, a towel, a run toward a firehouse or a medic — because abandonment in the cold is not a single night. What made this one hold in public memory was the mistake that saved him: a man who stopped for an animal and found a child.

Safe-haven laws now exist so a parent can leave a newborn at a hospital, police desk, or fire station without that dumpster. The 1983 baby never got that door. He got a lid lifted in time.
