JON VENABLES: THE NEW FIGHT OVER WHETHER HIS PAROLE HEARING SHOULD BE PUBLIC

JON VENABLES: THE NEW FIGHT OVER WHETHER HIS PAROLE HEARING SHOULD BE PUBLIC
More than 30 years after the murder of two-year-old James Bulger, his mother Denise Fergus and her husband Stuart have launched a fresh attempt to bring greater transparency to the parole process involving Jon Venables.

But this time, the key question is not simply whether Venables should be released.

It is whether the public should be allowed to see how that decision is made.

A NEW APPLICATION HAS BEEN FILED
The Parole Board confirmed on 7 August 2026 that it had received an application from Denise and Stuart Fergus asking for Venables’ parole hearing to be held in public.

Their application argues that the case has exceptional public interest and that a public hearing could help people better understand how parole decisions are made.

The request has not been approved.

The Parole Board is currently inviting representations before deciding whether the hearing should be opened to the public.

WHY DOES DENISE FERGUS WANT IT OPEN?
According to the application summary published by the Parole Board, the Fergus family says the case continues to generate extensive discussion and misinformation online.

They argue that greater transparency could help address that misinformation while allowing the public to understand how risk is assessed and managed.

They also argue that a public hearing would allow justice to be “done and seen to be done.”

For Denise Fergus, there is also a deeply personal dimension.

More than three decades after losing her son, she wants greater visibility into the process that will determine what happens next.

BUT IS VENABLES ACTUALLY “FIGHTING” TO KEEP IT PRIVATE?
That claim needs to be treated carefully.

The official Parole Board publication confirms that an application for a public hearing has been made and is now being considered.

It does not establish that Venables himself has launched a public campaign against the request.

That distinction matters.

The decision over whether the hearing becomes public belongs to the Parole Board, which must consider the application and the representations submitted.

JUSTICE FOR JAMES neHИ MEFENGLE tHim tim 10’THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE ISSUE HAS ARISEN
A previous application concerning a public hearing in the Venables case was rejected in 2023.

The current application is a new request and is being considered separately.

That makes the latest development particularly significant.

The question of transparency has returned to the centre of the case just as Venables faces another parole process.

HIS PREVIOUS PAROLE HISTORY
Venables was previously denied parole in 2020.

In December 2023, another parole application was rejected after the panel said it was not satisfied that his release would be safe for the protection of the public.

The current process is therefore being viewed against a long and complicated history of parole decisions.

WHAT WOULD A PUBLIC HEARING ACTUALLY MEAN?
It would not necessarily mean every detail becomes public.

The application itself argues that sufficient safeguards could be put in place if the hearing were opened.

That means sensitive information could potentially remain protected even if members of the public were allowed to observe proceedings.

So the debate is not simply:

“Privacy or total exposure?”

It is also about whether a carefully controlled public hearing could provide greater transparency without removing necessary protections.

FOR JAMES’ FAMILY, THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN PROCEDURE
James Bulger was just two years old when he was murdered in 1993.

For his mother, every parole process inevitably brings the case back into public attention.

Now she is asking for something beyond the eventual decision.

She wants the public to have a better opportunity to understand how that decision is reached.

And that has turned the latest parole process into another major test of transparency.

A NEW PUBLIC-HEARING APPLICATION HAS BEEN FILED.
THE PAROLE BOARD HAS NOT YET APPROVED IT.
REPRESENTATIONS ARE BEING CONSIDERED BEFORE A DECISION IS MADE.
DENISE FERGUS SAYS GREATER TRANSPARENCY COULD HELP THE FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS.
The next stage is now in the hands of the Parole Board.

Whether the hearing remains private or becomes open to the public, one thing is clear:

The debate over transparency in the Jon Venables parole process is not over.

Independent commentary based on publicly available information. The public-hearing application is still under consideration and does not determine the outcome of Venables’ parole case.
