LATEST UPDATE: THE MOTHER IN THE OHIO “HOUSE OF HORR0RS” CASE MADE A HEARTBREAKING PLEA… AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT SENT THE CASE DOWN A TRAGIC PATH, LEAVING MANY STUNNED

WARNING – DISTRESSING CONTENT: Elizabeth Siders’ attorney filed a motion to pursue a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

Ohio “house of horrors” mother Elizabeth Siders is considering an insanity plea following her arrest on multiple child endangerment charges.

Siders, 34, was among four adults arrested on June 30 after police carried out a search warrant obtained in response to a tip about Elizabeth’s husband, Gary Siders Jr., 36, to neighbors on four separate occasions. Authorities claim that the family’s Hamden home was found in deplorable conditions. Unexpectedly, authorities also found 16 “almost feral” children, between the ages of 18 months and 18 years old, allegedly living in . Some were unable to communicate, and several had to befor treatment, police said.

All four adults — Gary Siders Jr., 36; Gary Siders Sr., 73; Elizabeth Siders, 34; and Christina Siders, 67 — were taken into custody on child endangerment charges and entered not guilty pleas. Bail was set at $300,000 for each defendant.

In the new motion, Elizabeth’s attorney, J. Thomas Stolly said the mother appeared to be struggling with “significant mental health issues” that could prevent her from being able to competently take the stand. Rather, he is asking the court to determine whether she is not guilty by reason of insanity.

Details have continued to emerge about the high-profile Ohio “house of horrors” case, piquing interest across the country.

The latest reporting indicates that the mother was the last of the four defendants to ask the court to conduct a mental competency evaluation, which would assist her if she chooses to pursue an insanity plea, .

Now, all four defendants appear to be pursuing that line of defense. The news comes after the children’s grandfather, Gary Siders Sr., 73, was released Aug. 3 on a $300,000 bond. He will be required to wear a GPS monitor, attend court proceedings, alert authorities about any residency changes and complete random drug and alcohol tests. It remains unclear, however, if he was medically discharged or physically released.

Authorities described the Hamden home as being in “deplorable” conditions

The day after his release, Stolly, filed a motion where he raised concerns about the mother’s mental health following multiple meetings over an extended period of time between the pair where she was “crying and exhausted.”

“In fact, my client’s first question to me when I walked into the jail and introduced myself was about her kids. She asked if her children were OK, she asked if I knew where they were, and she asked when she’d be able to see them again,” he said, adding that while he could not answer her questions, that he “thought it was telling that her first concern was not, ‘When can I get out of jail?’ but was ‘Are my children OK?’”

The mother was reportedly the last to request that a court conduct a medical evaluation

The Mirror US previously reached out to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail about the case, and Lt. Matt Zartman replied via email that he was “unable to fulfill the public records request” due to a gag order issued by the Common Pleas Court of Vinton County.
