New disturbing details are emerging about how Elizabeth Siders was able to marry Gary Siders Jr. when she was just 15 years old and he was 18

As the case of the Ohio house of horrors, where 16 children were held in a small confinement, made headlines across the country, new questions are emerging about how 15-year-old Elizabeth Siders was able to marry 18-year-old Gary Siders Jr. Resurfaced records show a West Virginia judge approved the union.

Elizabeth, who is now 33, faces 16 counts of endangering children after 16 kids were rescued from the harrowing home. She was arrested earlier this month alongside her husband, Siders Jr., her father-in-law, Gary Siders Sr., and her mother-in-law, Christina Siders.

Elizabeth and Gary Siders Jr. married nearly 20 years ago, when she was 15 years old, and he was 18. Court documents show that a circuit court judge in West Virginia granted the marriage license in 2008. Two months after marrying, the couple had their first child.

The marriage does not come as a complete legal surprise, West Virginia family law attorney Amanda Alexander said, as at the time “there was no age minimum to marry in West Virginia.” In other words, 15-year-old Elizabeth was able to marry Gary Siders Jr. by acquiring the consent of her parents.

“The judge absolutely could have stopped this marriage,” Alexander notes. However, the law did not require the state to investigate the relationship or the union.

For Alexander, the question of a minor getting married is not so simple. She says that before allowing someone under 18 to marry, she would require more information from the couple and their families.

“I would want to know the relationship between the two. I’d want to appoint a guardian ad litem to interview the bride separately,” she said.

Since the Siders married in West Virginia, the law has now changed. Currently, the minimum age to marry is 16, with parental and court consent, and the age gap between spouses cannot exceed 4 years. Interestingly, there is still no requirement for a court investigation.

16 children found in Ohio house of horrors
The 16 children were found in a “disgusting” home in “deplorable” conditions inside a small, rural house in Hamden, a small village in southeastern Ohio that has a population of around 727 people.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said the home had signs of human excrement and believes the 16 children were kept in a 12ft by 12ft room for around four years. The alleged abuse went to such extreme extents, the sheriff said, that some of the younger children were barely able to communicate and had “limited” speech.

“Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children,” Cain said at a news conference. Meanwhile, shocked by what he had seen, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said he could not get the smell of the home “away from me,” describing the scenes as “pure evil.”

The children were taken to the hospital. Some were found in critical condition and were hospitalized, while others were examined and released. Two of the children were taken to trauma centers due to the extent of their injuries.

The children had never been enrolled in school, and the eldest could not spell her own name. She was described as developmentally disabled.

A judge in Vinton County entered not guilty pleas on behalf of the four defendants. Each of them was being held on a $300,000 bond and were prohibited from contacting one another or their children.

Siders Jr. was the subject of an unrelated warrant before the discovery of what was happening inside the home. Court records show a warrant was issued for Siders stemming from misdemeanor indecent exposure charges related to alleged incidents back in May.

Attorney Tamara Holder noted that several people would have seen or been involved with Sider’s alleged indecent exposure. “This means that on four separate occasions, at least one person from outside the house witnessed strange conduct,” she said.

“We have also learned that in 2022, Elizabeth Siders gave birth to conjoined twins. Presumably, people within the medical profession had knowledge about the woman’s inability to care for herself. The red flags were everywhere, but they were ignored.

Elizabeth Siders married Gary Siders Jr. in March 2008 at age 15, according to court records. Her parents consented to the marriage. Records show that she gave birth to their first daughter, who is now 18, just two months later.
