Newly released jail footage connected to the shocking Ohio “House of Horrors” investigation has drawn fresh attention to one of the most disturbing child welfare cases in recent memory, as investigators continue working to uncover what 16 children allegedly endured inside a cramped, neglected home in rural Hamden.
The video surfaced as authorities and child welfare specialists remain focused on helping the children recover after they were removed from the property. Prosecutors allege the minors, whose ages range from just 18 months to 18 years, had been living in filthy, overcrowded conditions with their parents, Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders, as well as grandparents Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders.
While the criminal case moves through the courts, experts say one of the most important tasks is not gathering physical evidence—but carefully listening to the children themselves.
Denise Rodriguez Bowman, a forensic interviewer who worked with the victims in California’s infamous Turpin family case, explained how specialists approach interviews with children who may have experienced years of abuse or neglect. Bowman previously interviewed the Turpin siblings after authorities rescued them from what became known as the Perris “House of Horrors” in 2018.
According to Bowman, forensic interviews are designed to help children feel safe enough to share their experiences without pressure. Rather than forcing a timeline or demanding answers, trained interviewers allow each child to control the pace of the conversation while gently asking follow-up questions when appropriate.
She said the process requires extraordinary patience, with interviews sometimes lasting hours depending on the child’s emotional state and willingness to speak.
“It’s a lot of patience on an interviewer’s part,” Bowman explained, noting that every child responds differently after being removed from traumatic circumstances.
Authorities allege the conditions inside the Ohio home were deeply disturbing. Public records indicate the 1,300-square-foot house, originally built in 1900, had only a single bathroom shared by 20 occupants—including the 16 children, their parents and both grandparents.
Investigators claim many of the children had been confined together in one room under deplorable living conditions before they were rescued.
Experts believe the children have likely been placed into foster care while the investigation continues. However, because of the large number of siblings involved, it may not be possible for all of them to remain together in one home.
Bowman said child welfare agencies typically try to arrange visits between separated siblings whenever professionals determine continued contact is in the children’s best interests. Maintaining those family bonds, she explained, can play an important role in the recovery process, even while criminal proceedings continue against the adults accused in the case.
One question many people have asked is whether the rescued children are asking to see their parents.
According to Bowman, there is no single answer. Children removed from abusive or neglectful environments often react in dramatically different ways. Some desperately want to return home because that is the only life they have ever known. Others experience overwhelming relief after finally being removed from dangerous circumstances.
She recalled that the Turpin siblings expressed immense relief following their rescue, with some telling investigators they never wanted to see their parents again.
The Ohio investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly disclosed what the children have revealed during their forensic interviews. Officials continue to prioritize the children’s medical treatment, emotional recovery and long-term safety as prosecutors build their case against the four adults charged in connection with the alleged abuse.
As more evidence—including the newly released jail footage—becomes public, investigators hope the children’s own accounts will provide the clearest picture yet of what happened inside the Ohio home that has come to be known as another alleged “House of Horrors.”
