A Race Against Time: The Remarkable Rescue of a Newborn Baby in Lagos, Nigeria

In July 2023, a dramatic rescue in Lagos, Nigeria, drew attention after a newborn baby was discovered abandoned inside a sewage tank in the Gowon Estate area of Ipaja.

According to reports from the Lagos State Police Command, the baby girl was only one day old when she was discovered at approximately 8:30 a.m. on July 12, 2023. A member of the public alerted officers from the Gowon Estate Police Division, who quickly arrived at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the discovery were particularly distressing. Initial reports described the infant as having been abandoned in or near a sewage tank. One account from the National Accord reported that she was found inside a plastic container and wrapped in cloth.

Police officers immediately took the newborn to a health centre for medical attention. Despite the terrifying circumstances in which she was found, authorities reported that the baby was alive and doing well following the rescue. She was subsequently taken into protective custody at the Juvenile Welfare Centre in Alakara, Mushin.

The case quickly attracted public attention, with many people expressing relief that the infant had been found in time. Her survival was made possible by the intervention of the person who discovered her and the rapid response of the police officers who brought her to safety.

However, some details circulating online appear to have become exaggerated over time. In particular, reliable reports do not confirm that the baby was rescued from a nearly four-metre-deep sewage pit by a complex operation involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, nor do they confirm that she was treated at a specific Mother and Child Health Centre. The strongest contemporary reports instead identify the Lagos State Police Command as the rescuing authority and a health centre as the location for her initial medical care.

What remains firmly documented is the central story: a one-day-old baby was found abandoned in a sewage tank in Gowon Estate, Lagos, rescued by police, taken for medical attention and reported to be doing well.

Her survival is a powerful reminder of how quickly a desperate situation can change when someone chooses to act. A single alert from a concerned member of the public led to a police response—and ultimately gave a newborn child a chance to survive.
