The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has entered another closely watched phase as investigators continue working to determine what happened after she vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home earlier this year.

Nancy was last seen at her residence in the Catalina Foothills on January 31, 2026. The FBI describes her as a vulnerable adult who has difficulty walking, uses a pacemaker, and requires daily medication, making the search especially urgent.

Investigators have spent months examining surveillance footage, forensic evidence, witness information, and other leads connected to the case. Despite the extensive search, Nancy has not been located, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.

One of the most significant developments involved communications described as ransom notes. Multiple messages surfaced during the investigation, creating questions about whether Nancy had been taken and whether the communications were genuinely connected to her disappearance.

The situation became even more complicated after Reuters reported that the FBI had determined the kidnapping-related notes it reviewed were fake. That assessment has raised new questions about the origin of the messages and what they may—or may not—reveal about Nancy’s disappearance.

Investigators have nevertheless continued examining physical evidence connected to Nancy’s home and the surrounding area. Earlier forensic work included DNA analysis and other evidence intended to help establish what happened around the time she disappeared.

A masked individual was also captured in surveillance footage near Nancy’s home around the time of her disappearance, giving investigators another potentially important piece of evidence to examine. Authorities have continued analyzing available footage and other information in an effort to establish a reliable timeline.

The case has also received renewed attention as the six-month mark approaches. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos recently addressed the investigation, including questions surrounding the ransom communications and the department’s relationship with the FBI.

For Nancy’s family, the uncertainty has been devastating. Her daughter, TODAY co-host Savannah Guthrie, and other relatives have repeatedly appealed for information, asking anyone who knows something about Nancy’s disappearance to come forward.

The FBI continues to list Nancy as missing and is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to her recovery or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved.

Despite months of searches and investigative work, major questions remain unanswered: Where is Nancy Guthrie? Who, if anyone, was responsible for her disappearance? And what happened inside or around her home on the night she was last seen?
